Adding items to the MariaDB 5.1 Reference Manual

Here is the suggested procedure to follow when you add something to MariaDB 5.1 which needs to be documented:

  1. Go to the Manual:Contents page and add a link to the manual page you want to create. The link should start with "Manual:".
    • For example, if you are creating a documentation page for the Maria engine the link would look like this: "[[Manual:Maria Engine]]" instead of the more generic "[[Maria Engine]]".
  2. After saving the Manual:Contents page, click on the new link and add your text to the new page. The text can just be placeholder text if you are pushed for time.
  3. Before saving the new page, add the [[Category:MariaDB 5.1 Reference Manual]] tag to the bottom of the page.

I (dbart) will be checking the index and table-of-contents pages every day to look for new items and I will try to flesh out any stub pages or placeholder links. If I need more information I will follow up with the creator of the page/link.

I will also be going through the public wiki and the worklog and adding things, so check the TOC to see if there is an existing page you can use before creating a new one.

Notes on the above procedure

Categories

The "MariaDB 5.1 Reference Manual" exists as a category on the AskMonty.org wiki as part of the Manual namespace. The index for this category is here: Category:MariaDB 5.1 Reference Manual and the table-of-contents is here: Manual:Contents.

Any page marked with the "MariaDB 5.1 Reference Manual" category tag will automatically be linked to from the index page. The tag to add to wiki pages which you want to appear in this category should look like this:

[[Category:MariaDB 5.1 Reference Manual]]

You can place this tag anywhere on the page, but for simplicity I usually put it at the bottom. As a side note, multiple categories can be added to a single page.

The Manual Namespace

There is a custom namespace for use with wiki pages that are meant to be part of the manual. This namespace is called "Manual". You add a page to the namespace by putting "Manual:" before the rest of the page title when you create the initial link to the page. You can also move a page into the namespace by simply renaming the page (if you have the rights to).
